The Green Key award is a leading standard of excellence in the field of environmental responsibility and sustainable operation within the tourism industry. This prestigious eco-label award represents Villa Hotels & Resorts commitment to adhere to the strict criteria as stipulated by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). Achieving Green Key demonstrates the resorts efforts to develop an environmentally friendly, sustainable, and responsible business.

Sun Island Resort & Spa and Royal Island Resort & Spa have implemented a sustainability policy and concrete plan with objectives and annual actions formulated for continuous improvements in environmental management, social and cultural commitments and health and safety issues. The resorts have developed strategies to keep the natural ecology of the islands untouched and preserve the nature of the Maldivian islands. This includes avoiding the use of pesticides and environmental pollutants and using natural alternatives as well as using eco cleaning products.

In addition, the resorts continually monitor the usage of energy and water and have devised innovative initiatives to minimize usage with the aim to reduce their carbon footprint and work towards the goal to achieve carbon neutrality. The resorts have elected an Environment Manager and Environment Committee at each resort to oversee the environmental initiatives and continue to work towards annual goals. The high environmental standards that the resorts have achieved to be Green Key certified will be maintained through rigorous documentation and frequent audits.
